Womanist observer Mary Lu Lewis interviews Audre Lorde in her hotel room after the Broadside Press 10th Anniversary Celebration, 1975.  Michelle Citron behind the camera (and briefly in front of it).  The pair did several interviews during Broadside’s 10th Anniversary, but the other tapes haven’t surfaced yet.  These two survived thanks to Lewis.

  • Collection Summary: This collection consists of a single interview taped during the 10th Anniversary Celebration of Broadside Press held at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, in 1975. Womanist observer Mary Lu Lewis conducted the interview. Filmmaker Michelle Citron acted as camera person. The two had become a couple just two weeks earlier. Over the course of the interview, Audre, Mary Lu, and Michelle became fast friends and the interview ultimately becomes a conversation between the three. Subsequently Mary Lu visited Audre Lorde in New York City several times, and the two became good friends.
