- Biographical/Historical Note: Payne's Prairie is an over 20,000 acre state park in Alachua County, Florida. In 2004 a hurricane resulted in the flooding of of the entire prairie basin. The basin drains via the Alachua Sink, which has recurrently become so blocked or full it has taken a very long time to drain. It's home to an abundance of wildlife.
